Benedict Cumberbatch: I Get Typecast as 'Posh' Characters
Benedict Cumberbatch -- you know, that tall, angular fellow in 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,' 'War Horse' and the BBC's Sherlock Holmes -- says he often gets typecast as rich and upper-class. Cumberbatch told Radio Times, "Being a posh actor in England, you can't escape class-typing, from whatever side you look at it. I realized quite early on that, although I wasn't trying to make a career specialty of it, I was playing slightly asexual, sociopathic intellectuals." That must be why, as his 'Sherlock' co-star Martin Freeman explains, his nickname is "Cumberlord." In an interview with The Huffington Post, his 'War Horse' co-star Patrick Kennedy described how Cumberbatch's arrogant commanding officer rubbed off on their relationship when the camera wasn't rolling: "We fell into our roles very quickly as a sort of dynamic outside of the film," Kennedy said. "I was the joker, Tom [Hiddleston] was the sort of noble, sincere and heroic one, Benedict was the sort of stern, more pompous one, and we were joking with each other around that dynamic." Before landing the role of Holmes, Cumberbatch played Scarlett Johansson's unlikable husband in 'The Other Boelyn Girl,' the real culprit in 'Atonement' and physicist Stephen Hawking in a 2004 TV movie. He's also voicing the villainous dragon Smaug in the upcoming 'Hobbit' films, which stars his 'Sherlock' mate Freeman. Cheetah Dead: 'Tarzan' Chimpanzee Dies at Near 80 [UPDATE]
From 'Project Nim' to 'Rise from the Planet from the Apes,' 2011 was the entire year from the primate. Regrettably, it appears like things will finish on the sad note. Cheetah, the chimpanzee most widely known for his operate in the 'Tarzan' movies from the '30s, died on Sunday of kidney failure. He was almost eighty years old. Cheetah made an appearance in Tarzan films between 1932 and 1934 -- particularly 'Tarzan the Ape Man' and 'Tarzan and the Mate' -- opposite actor Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan. "He was very compassionate," Darlene Cobb, the outreach director at Suncoast Primate Sanctuary told The Polk Tribune. "He could know if I had been getting a great day or perhaps a bad day. He was always looking to get me to laugh if he thought I had been getting a poor day. He was very in tune to human feelings." Cheetah outlived normal captivity chimps by nearly 4 decades. It does not appear that Cheetah left out any children. UPDATE: Or possibly Cheetah did not die over the past weekend. Within an interview with Dork Itzkoff from the NY Occasions, Dr. Steve Ross, the assistant director in the Lester E. Fisher Center for that Study and Conservation of Apes in the Lincoln subsequently Park Zoo in Chicago, stated it had been "very improbable" that Cheetah live to become nearly 80, which records were dodgy at best. The plot, as the saying goes, thickens... [Polk Tribune via NYT/ArtsBeat] [Photo: AP] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook

Chinese Government Thinks Christian Bale Ought To Be 'Embarrassed'
And also you thought Bane was Batman's greatest antagonist. Following his scuffle with government government bodies in China a week ago, Christian Bale continues to be known as by the Chinese government to be an opportunist searching to "create news." Bale was detained by Chinese pads a week ago as he tried to see Chen Guangcheng, a blind civil privileges activist and lawyer that has been under house arrest in China for more than a year after protecting "1000's of ladies who have been sufferers of forced sterilizations and abortions." "I am not brave carrying this out,Inch Bale told CNN. "The neighborhood those who are standing towards the government bodies and insisting ongoing to go to Chen and the family and becoming beaten up for this and my understanding gets detained for this -- I wish to support what they are doing." About their own insufficient bravery, it appears china government concurs. "If anybody ought to be embarrassed it is the relevant actor, not china side," Liu Weimin, a Chinese ministry spokesperson, told Reuters. "Things I understand would be that the actor was asked through the director Zhang Yimou to go to the film premiere. He wasn't asked to the village in Shandong to produce news or create a film. If he really wants to create news, I do not think that might be welcomed by China." Bale stars in 'The Flowers of War,' concerning the infamous Rape of Naking in 1937. As Bale's publicist told Huffington Publish, the Batman star was "there for work" and was "just really managed to move on an individual level," and that's why he tried to see Chen. Drama actor/actress contenders at the Globes
George Clooney in 'The Descendants'Brad Pitt in 'Moneyball'Michael Fassbender in 'Shame'Meryl Streep in 'The Iron Lady'The 69th Golden Globes' lead acting drama nominees were a mix of business-as-usual -- think A-list star power -- and a few surprise names that potentially set the stage for an interesting competition and some possible upsets. The lead actor drama category sported such heavyweight and predictable contenders as George Clooney (playing vulnerable and lost in "The Descendants"), Leonardo DiCaprio (playing young and old in "J. Edgar") and Brad Pitt (playing charming and headstrong in "Moneyball").Perennial Globe faves Clooney (oft-nominated and winner for "Syriana" and "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"), DiCaprio (six noms and winner for "The Aviator") and Pitt (four noms and winner for "Twelve Monkeys") are joined by newer Globe fave Ryan Gosling (nommed for "Blue Valentine" and "Lars and the Real Girl") for his role as the decent but opportunistic press secretary opposite Clooney's winning but deeply flawed presidential candidate in "The Ides of March."The real surprise is the inclusion of Michael Fassbender, notching up his first Globe nom for his performance as a lonely sex addict, in Brit director Steve McQueen's "Shame." While some American critics dismissed the film as arthouse soft-core porn, the HFPA -- with its Euro-centric membership -- happily embraced the film, with its explicit sex and nudity, and ignored the actor's other high-profile turn as Carl Jung in David Cronenberg's "A Dangerous Method."Fassbender's nom meant that several other potential nominees in widely-admired performances, including Gary Oldman ("Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy"), Ralph Fiennes ("Coriolanus"), Woody Harrelson ("Rampart") and Daniel Craig ("The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo") were shut out.For lead actress drama, the list of nominees was also a mix of Globe regulars and a surprise name. Meryl Streep, oft-nominated and a previous winner (most recently for "Julie and Julia" and "The Devil Wears Prada"), scored another nom for her turn (and impeccable accent) as former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady." She was joined by Glenn Close, also oft-nominated and a previous winner (most recently for "Damages"), for her gender-bending perf as a butler in 19th century Ireland in "Albert Nobbs."The two titans face off against each other and two more Globe faves -- Tilda Swinton, nommed for "Michael Clayton" and "The Deep End," and Viola Davis, previously nommed for "Doubt." While the HFPA ignored Swinton's turn in last year's "I Am Love," her perf in "We Need to Talk About Kevin" was widely admired. Davis, as the dignified center of "The Help," is riding the wave of acclaim for the drama, which scored five noms overall. The big surprise is the inclusion of newcomer Rooney Mara. After a small role in David Fincher's "The Social Network," the actress is drawing praise for her turn as the messed-up but brilliant hacker Lisbeth Salander in Fincher's version of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." That role also secured international stardom for Sweden's Noomi Rapace.Shut out were "The Help's" Emma Stone (nommed last year for "Easy A"), Kirsten Dunst ("Melancholia") and Keira Knightley ("A Dangerous Method").GOLDEN GLOBES COUNTDOWN Year of couples therapyThe ContendersDrama: Best Picture | Comedy: Best Picture | Best Director | Drama Actor/Actress | Comedy Actor/Actress Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Ma, Diamond, Streep Receive Kennedy Center Honors
WASHINGTON (AP) As Meryl Streep and four other artistic luminaries were saluted with Kennedy Center Honors, the actress got a future film assignment to play the role of Hillary Rodham Clinton.Writer Nora Ephron said Streep's talent, versatility and resemblance to Clinton made it "inevitable" that she would one day play the secretary of state and former first lady. Clinton, who flew home for 36 hours to celebrate the honorees over the weekend, just laughed, while Streep stood up to get a better look at the nation's top diplomat.Along with Streep, pop singer Neil Diamond, Broadway singer Barbara Cook, famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma and jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins received the U.S.'s top award Sunday night for those who have influenced American culture through the arts.Caroline Kennedy, who hosts the show as part of a living memorial to her father, the late President John F. Kennedy, acknowledged her personal connection to one honoree. In a nod to Diamond, she said he was "a Brooklyn lad with a gift of melody who grew into a solitary man, 'reaching out, touching me.'" That was enough to draw big laughs as the crowd of celebrities and politicians recalled that Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" was named for her.Smokey Robinson sang "Sweet Caroline" with help from Kennedy and fans brought in from Boston's Fenway Park, where it's a favorite anthem.Lionel Richie, who sang, "I am... I said," told The Associated Press he got into the music business because he wanted to be Diamond."He's a great storyteller," Richie said. "He's not an acrobatic singer. Basically he told the story in a very simple voice."Classical music stole the show's finale, though, with surprise tributes from comedian Stephen Colbert who seemed lost at first and the puppet Elmo from TV's "Sesame Street.""Tonight we celebrate the greatest living cellist," Colbert said "We chell-ebrate, if you will."Ma, one of the best-known classical musicians, has played cello since he was 4. At age 7, he played for presidents Kennedy and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Now at 56, he is hailed as a musical ambassador to the world, spanning styles from Bluegrass to sounds from the Silk Road with an ensemble he founded. Many of his friends performed in his honor.Elmo, dressed in a tux, said he came to honor his friend Ma, who taught him that "music is like a playground" that makes everybody happy.James Taylor and conductor John Williams joined in a performance of "Here Comes the Sun" with a string ensemble.Earlier President Barack Obama lauded the actors and musicians at the White House."They have different talents, and they've traveled different paths," Obama said. "And yet they belong here together because each of tonight's honorees has felt the need to express themselves and share that expression with the world."He said everyone has that desire for self-expression."That's why we dance, even if, as Michelle says, I look silly doing it," he added to laughter.Rodham Clinton flew home between visits to Myanmar and Germany to honor the artists with a dinner Saturday night."You may not know it, but somewhere in a little tiny room in Burma or even in North Korea, someone is desperately trying to hear you or to see you, to experience you," Clinton said. "And if they are lucky enough to make that connection, it can literally change lives and countries."Streep, 62, has made more than 45 movies and won two Oscars in her career. Her movies have spanned Shakespeare and "Angles in America" to portraying chef Julia Child in "Julie and Julia." Streep will play British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the upcoming "The Iron Lady."Streep said she was in awe of the accolades."Look where we are, look who's here," Streep told the AP. "It's overwhelming. I feel very proud."Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway, who co-stared with Streep in "The Devil Wears Prada," joined Kevin Kline and Stanley Tucci for a musical tribute to Streep.Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick opened the tributes to Cook, recalling the days when they first started dating and went to hear Cook sing at the Cafe Carlyle in NY."I don't think Matthew at the time knew what kind of special memory he was creating for us," Parker said."Oh, I knew," Broderick said.Cook, 84, made her Broadway debut in 1951, and later Leonard Bernstein cast her in his musical "Candide." She topped that performance as Marian the Librarian in 1957's hit musical "The Music Man," for which she won a Tony Award.A film tribute noted Cook went silent for a decade, due to drinking and depression, but she came back.Rollins, 81, is a jazz saxophonist who has shared the stage with Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie, among others."America is the home of jazz. It's what we started," he said. "By the way, hip hop music is a part of jazz, believe it or not."Friend Bill Cosby marveled about how he has heard Rollins' distinctive sax around the world in Greece, Hong Kong, Italy and found so many people who knew the musician's work.Benny Golson and Herbie Hancock joined in playing some of Rollins' tunes.Fellow sax player and former President Bill Clinton said he has been a fan since age 15 or 16, when he bought his first Rollins LP and played it until it was worn out."His music can bend your mind, it can break your heart, and it can make you laugh out loud," Clinton said. "He has done things with improvisation that really no one has ever done."Copyright 2011 Associated Press. All rights reserved. New 'John Carter' Images Give Better Look at Mars
It will be interesting to see how Disney proceeds with marketing "John Carter," formerly "of Mars," Andrew Stanton's big-budget adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs fantasy novels. With an untested star, Taylor Kitsch, and a first trailer that left most people lukewarm about the film's prospects, a boost in profile is certainly called for. Something along those lines began last week when Entertainment Weekly published photos of the six-armed White Ape, a staple in the novels that's getting a more threatening treatment for the film version. Check it out after the break. Then, director Andrew Stanton, known mostly for his fantastic Pixar work, tweeted that a new trailer will premiere this Wednesday (11/30) on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" with its star and then find its way online the following day. Now we have a handful of new images courtesy of SFX magazine that give a better look at the world of Mars—excuse me, Barsoom—and the technology we'll see on the planet. There are certainly elements of "Avatar" here, and that's what Disney may be going for. Also, there's a lot of shirtless Kitsch, if that's your bag. Importantly for fans of the novels, the photos offer another look at the alien race from the books, the Tharks. They're the thin, four-armed and horned species that popped up briefly in the trailer, and here's another peek. The pictures point us in the right direction toward a more complete idea of what to expect from "John Carter." Look for the second trailer this week to delve deeper into the conflict at the heart of the story and offer more than the tease from the first trailer. What do you think of the "John Carter" photos? Tim Allen Saves the household Sitcom with Last Guy Standing
Tim Allen All Tim Allen wants for the holiday season is a couple of awesome outside devices. Try not to expect him to make use of them. "I really like the idea of me available fishing and hunting and camping," states Allen, on the break from rehearsals for his ABC hit Last Guy Standing. "However I do not do it.Inch May be the guy who bemoans the condition of his gender on his new sitcom going through their own macho crisis? Less than. Allen simply does not possess the time for you to pursue the testosterone-fueled hobbies he touts on his show. "My spouse states, 'We're not likely to start doing all that, shall we be?AInch he reviews. "Let me acquire one of individuals stupid RVs that appears as if you can drive it towards the North Pole. She states, 'You know it is going to sit and not go anywhere, right? And I only say, 'You're most likely right.'" Allen squabbling together with his spouse over his macho hobbies seems like a plotline ripe for Last Guy Standing. Inside a season when several new shows handled the demise of males (including CBS' rapidly canceled How to become a Gentleman and ABC's battling Guy Up!), Allen's show has resonated probably the most with audiences. Last Guy Standing first showed to solid rankings, bringing in a lot more than 15 million audiences (including seven days' price of Digital recording device usage). Which was adequate for ABC, which gave the comedy a complete-season order. It is a theme that matches the actor just like a comfortable set of dungarees - and it is most likely no real surprise that Allen was instrumental in hammering the character that finally introduced him to television. "It isn't misogynist. I refer to it as masculinist," Allen states. "Celebrate what it's to become a guy." Twelve years after he stuck his tools on ABC's extremely effective the nineteen nineties comedy Do It Yourself, Allen now plays Mike Baxter, the marketing director of Outside Guy, a imaginary sporting-goods chain. When the organization cuts his travel budget, Mike ends up investing additional time in your own home, where he's encircled with a wife (Nancy Travis) and three rowdy kids. Like Tim Taylor before him, Mike Baxter shares a great deal with Tim Allen. The actor is another guy searching to say themself within an oestrogen-dominant household he's raising your child daughter together with his wife, actress Jane Hajduk. And merely as Do It Yourself drawn on into Allen's passion for guy stuff, Last Guy Standing gives Allen a power outlet to fool around using the type of large-boy toys the thing is in individuals supersize outside stores. "I can not re-create Do It Yourself,Inch Allen states. "I can not forget which i made it happen - I loved that demonstrate. And So I re-produced a picture from it. It is really an alter ego into it. Same guy, but much butchier. Tim Taylor would be a little unhappy. Mike Baxter isn't unhappy. I'm not going him putting on a flannel shirt having a T-shirt underneath. He's a College of Michigan graduate. He's been around the globe. So he can't make jokes about paninis and lattes. This dude has existed gay people." It is a warm October mid-day in La, but on Last Guy Standing's soundstage, fake snow is spread outdoors the Baxters' Colorado home. Allen is running lines with Travis and also the three stars who play their kids, Molly Ephraim, Alexandra Krosney and Kaitlyn Dever. The cast walks over the type of set TV audiences increased familiar with through the years - family room, kitchen, staircase, door - but has become mostly absent from comedy. When Do It Yourself opened in 1991, TV was saturated with family sitcoms, in the Cosby Show to Roseanne. Nowadays, save for ABC's Modern Family and also the Middle and Fox's Raising Hope, sitcom people are an uncommon commodity in prime time. And traditional multicamera family shows have disappeared to cable (where systems like TV Land and Disney Funnel have them going). Really, a great deal has transformed within the years since Allen left TV to pay attention to movies and go back to stand-up. "Tim required a large risk in returning to TV," states professional producer Marsh McCall. "We are trying to not allow him to lower." The actor states he's still modifying his mind-set to how audiences now consume TV. "Individuals attention spans are limited," he states. "I'm not sure whether it's Twitter, Facebook, 800 channels, family problems, the economy... but keeping individuals attention is really a formidable task. They become bored rapidly. Unless of course there's sexual content or even the cheapest common denominator." This is the fight Allen's fighting. This content on Last Guy Standing could have been considered completely edgy two decades ago, however feels tame when stacked facing other prime-time sitcoms. "You will find implies that will stay nameless, but It's surprising they are on network TV," he states. "Standards and Practices does not have trouble with 'chlamydia' at 8 o'clock. We have decreased our standards." Allen states he isn't against working blue, but he favors to order that material for his grown ups-only shows in Las vegas. "You are not likely to see me carrying this out [stuff] at 8pm. I am fighting this constantly. I am parents about this set." Hector Elizondo, who plays Mike's boss, states Last Guy advantages of as being a traditional show. "Its strength is within its safe place," he states. "The truth that it's familiar territory." 9 Key events within the Evolution of Steve Martin
Within this weekend’s The Large Year, Steve Martin stars like a wealthy retired person who stays his spare time spanning the world looking for rare bird species — an interest that provides method to a contest against his similarly “birding” excited buddies performed by Jack Black and Owen Wilson. So precisely how does a Texas-born stand-up transform themself in to the only effective actor/comedian/author/playwright/banjo player/Emmy champion/onscreen bird watcher in Hollywood history? You could trace an immediate line via a couple of important roles as one example of what brought for an actor’s current success. As a result, let’s take a look at nine pivotal performances that track the evolution of Steve Martin. The Smothers Siblings Comedy Hour (1968) Although born in Texas, Martin was elevated in California where he analyzed miracle, labored having a comedy troupe at Knott’s Berry Farm and finally analyzed philosophy being an undergraduate at California Condition College, Lengthy Beach. By age 23, Martin had moved schools, switched majors (to theater), made an appearance with an episode from the Dating Scene and was ready for his large Hollywood break: The Smothers Siblings Comedy Hour. After being hired like a author on the program (which may earn him an Emmy his newbie), Martin was from time to time drawn onstage through the stars from the series for comedy programs that in some instances (like below), involved his adolescent hobby, miracle. Saturday Evening Live (1976) Although, unlike popular belief, Martin never was a cast member around the NBC sketch comedy series, the actor has located the show 15 occasions starting with a look and feel in 1976 that will help popularize the comedian with American audiences. It had been throughout the mid-to-late s the actor’s comedy career required off due to his television looks, his comedy albums (that went platinum) and the “King Tut” single, that the actor carried out throughout probably the most costly SNL sketches at that time. Because of that national exposure, the only offered on the million copies and assisted his album An Outrageous and Crazy Guy win a Grammy. Getting accomplished success on paper, recording and small screen comedy, the multi-talent was now poised for his giant screen breakthrough. The Jerk (1979) Getting us towards the Jerk, which remains many Steve Martin fans’ favorite Steve Martin movie in addition to his feature screenwriting debut and the giant screen acting breakthrough. (Several weeks before, Martin offered Kermit and Miss Piggy as “Insolent Waiter” within the Muppet Movie.) Martin starred as Navin R. Manley, an easy-minded fellow who finds fortune with an unlikely invention — despite the fact that he's so imbecilic he doesn’t understand that because his parents are black, and that he is whitened, he or she must be adopted. The film would be a hit with experts (well, aside from Roger Ebert, who “didn’t discover the Jerk very funny). It was also Martin’s to begin four collaborations with director Carl Reiner — who continued to direct the author/actor in Dead Males Don’t Put on Plaid, The Guy with Two Brains and every one of Me. Pennies From Paradise (1981) Rather than coasting from the Jerk’s success by turning out a couple of cash-grab comedies, Martin adopted his giant screen breakthrough together with his first dramatic role in Herbert Ross’s musical film Pennies From Paradise. Martin am devoted towards the project — which took it's origin from an english miniseries he considered “the finest factor [he’d] seen — he spent six several weeks understanding how to tap dance. Like a married written music salesperson who falls for any schoolteacher (Bernadette Peters), Martin was belittled for giving a heartless (although technically proficient) performance. Later that decade, Martin would more effectively mix darkness and dancing within the adaptation format with Little Shop of Disasters, where he performed a sadistic singing dental professional.

The trails of Jobs
Steve JobsThere may be primitive tribesmen inside the Amazon . com . com or monks in Tibet who've been untouched by Jobs and Apple. But if you are reading through through this in guides, online or by having an application, Jobs touched your existence. There has been other desktop computer systems around when Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple in 1976. After they created the Apple computers in 1984, others duplicated the enhancements, sometimes adding flourishes and sometimes causing them to be cheaper. Nevertheless the blueprint was usually Apple's.When first buying a pc, I asked for my technical-est friend for advice. He mentioned, "It's like buying an automobile. If you're just trying to find a thing that goes forward and reverse and may turn right and left, there are plenty of options. If you want to invest a little many get yourself a Comes-Royce, buy an Apple."People in Hollywood sometimes bristled that Jobs was arrogant and remote. Frankly, essentially had his brain, I'd be arrogant too. Observe that ipod device device: that wheel as well as the five round indents: So simple, so brilliant. Click and drag, the rule-of-thumb on every Mac computer: Amazing! A control button! The apple apple iphone! In the event you experienced a period of time machine and shown that to people two-and-a-half decades ago, they'd faint or wet their pants. Or both. The obituaries for Jobs, who died March. 5 carrying out a years-extended fight with pancreatic cancer, naturally stressed his role as tech innovator. But unlike many brilliant individuals who're absent-minded professors, he appeared to become a businessman.Apple briefly transformed Exxon since the world's best company in August (coincidentally the identical month he walked lower as Boss). When he died, his personal wealth was thought at $8.3 billion. Then when settling with leaders in the film, TV and music industries, Jobs presented a proper strategic business plan which will increase their earnings, but on his terms, for instance prices iTunes options at 99. Being unyielding when faced with corporate professionals is, for them, an unpardonable sin. Nonetheless they frequently recognized his terms, since they didn't search for a much better alternative. He appeared to become a showman and happened to own great taste. The products as well as the graphics are attractive. As well as the Apple Stores will be the embodiment of feng shui. They hypnotize clients into trying to purchase, in a tech-driven world that's progressively separating, furthermore they be considered a community gathering place. I met Jobs once. And (at the risk of sounding title-droppy) it absolutely was within the Academy awards.Among the most popular regions of the Oscars reaches the conclusion, as everybody delays for cars in a corner of Hollywood & Highland, huddling beneath the warmth lamps just like a dozen valets with bullhorns at the same time shout the amount inside your parking ticket because the vehicle finally arrives. And Jobs banded there inside the crowd like everyone else, smiling and looking out off traffic, consuming the scene. I introduced myself which he was puppy-dog friendly and funny we spoken mostly about Pixar. I'm not frequently star-struck, however I don't are often the chance to fulfill a stranger who affects my existence each day.As David Cohen written in Variety's March. 5 obit, Jobs "may have had the best impact on everyday lives generally, and showbiz particularly, connected having a technologist since Thomas Edison -- and also the impact on showbiz dwarfs even Edison's he transformed the means by which individuals work and communicate -- and how entertainment is created and consumed."Pixar is ok. With Tim Prepare as well as the team, Apple will probably be fine. There won't be another Jobs later on along for just about any very very long time. I have heard horror tales about his control over lots of people. Essentially were one of these simple, I'd be writing another piece, however wasn't one of these simple, to be able to shrug and quote "Some Appreciate It Hot": "No a person's perfect."Yes, I have drunk the Apple-flavored Kool-Aid. Yes, I am a longtime Apple addict. And pleased with it. n Contact Timothy M. Gray at tim.gray@variety.com

Canada nixes Netflix levy
MONTREAL -- Canada's media watchdog ruled Wednesday that it's going to not pressure web players like Netflix to spend cash to assist local programming, providing them with in line with levies on television stations. Taken many on the market -- including top tv producers -- had advised the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission to produce web players pump a couple of of the revenue into Canadian-content. But following a weight fact-finding mission, the CRTC mentioned in the statement there's no evidence that audiences were reducing or deleting TV monthly monthly subscriptions to alter to web services. Rather the CRTC thinks that "on the web and mobile programming appears being complementary for the content supplied by the conventional broadcasting system." Video-streaming service Netflix bowed in Canada this past year and contains on the million clients. The CRTC found the identical conclusion couple of years ago, saying in those days that there has been no enterprise models in place for web broadcasting, despite the fact that it conceded this time around around around that business models do now exist. The television stations are unhappy because they have to pay millions to help support creating local TV programming while Netflix need not spend out anything at all. But Canadian producers be encouraged from the fact the CRTC is not letting the television stations ditch the obligations because of competition from web tv producers. In the statement, the Canadian Media Production Assn. mentioned it absolutely was happy the CRTC was alert to your competitors on the web companies so it recognized that "reducing broadcasters' current Canadian programming obligations is not the answer.Inch Contact the number newsroom at news@variety.com

REVIEW: Frederick Gordon-Levitt Gives 50/50 a Fighting Chance
The planet needs more cancer comedies. But it might not require more cancer comedies like 50/50. It’s not too 50/50 is insensitive or dull or unfunny — it sidesteps all individuals potential defects using the delicacy of the very precise surgeon. On the other hand, the image’s delicacy might be misplaced: Directed by Jonathan Levine (who, in 2008, introduced us The Wackness) and compiled by Will Reiser, 50/50 never risks problem or shocking us so far as cancer position goes, however it does slot in certain pretty ho-hum non-cancer-related crudeness wherever it may. When cancer-stricken Adam, performed by Frederick Gordon-Levitt, shaves his mind with electric clippers owned by his closest friend, Kyle (Seth Rogen), you don’t need to guess where individuals clippers happen to be — the film informs you. But where 50/50 does succeed is within showing cancer — or illness generally — as part of existence, rather than just dealing with it as being a tool to create the dramatic weight swinging. The image might be so a lot better than it's, but it’s also the type of movie which makes you need to grade around the curve, adding extra points permanently intentions. Adam and Kyle are pals who operate in radio, the kind of gig that may have appeared wonderful job even two decades ago, however might as well be work carried out by dinosaurs (and I only say that ruefully). There’s no great buildup to Adam’s diagnosis, no overwrought, underlit “I found a lump!” preamble. His physician provides diagnosing inside a stream of jargon it requires Adam a couple of minutes to determine that the issue is a tumor mounted on his spine, and also the prognosis isn’t promising. It’s bad enough to suffer from your personal illness 50/50 appreciates just how much it sucks you need to help others cope with it too. Kyle, for just one, accepts Adam’s news by only half-accepting it. Realizing that Adam’s girlfriend (an icy, fluttery-eyed Bryce Dallas Howard) is under encouraging, he sets to get Adam laid, without discerning whether that’s what Adam wants — it’s that that’s what he thinks he’d want. (It’s a stride from the picture’s mindfulness that making love really causes Adam some discomfort, something which wouldn’t have happened to Kyle.) Meanwhile, Adam goodies his illness as business as always — what else can there be to complete? He starts his chemo remedies, where he makes pals of any age (one performed through the wonderful Philip Baker Hall) he attempts to dodge his clearly concerned but overbearing mother (Anjelica Houston, taking advantage of a mildly dimensional role) and, most considerably, he starts attending periods having a worked up junior counselor, Katherine (Anna Kendrick, putting her half-charming, half-awkward timing to operate). All individuals are stuff that real people might do, and Gordon-Levitt navigates them with techniques which are refreshingly unstrained. Plus, there’s just not a way around it: When you’d rather avoid seeing anybody get struck with cancer, you actually don’t need to see Gordon-Levitt struck with cancer — his youth has something related to it, but that’s not everything. Gordon-Levitt appears to be if he emerged in the womb a little concerned about how things would come out. There’s an aura of thoughtful nervous about him, that is a part of why is his careful smile so appealing and effective if this breaks through. Gordon-Levitt makes 50/50 worth watching, despite the fact that the unfortunate reality from the picture is the fact that Seth Rogen is definitely near by, ready to create a comment about his balls or his dick or blow-jobs generally. Just keepin’ it real, I suppose. However it’s time for Rogen to toss the overgrown schlub routine. Besides, 50/50 doesn’t need an overgrown schlub whatsoever. The small-tragedy of 50/50 is the fact that we actually can use a comedy, or perhaps a dramedy, or anything you’d prefer to refer to it as, that addresses — amongst other things — the way a severe illness might affect a man’s sex existence, or his prospects for romance. But we live at a time when sexual frankness usually means a lot of raw comments in the peanut gallery, disassociated from anything apart from their very own free-floating id. 50/50 falls into that trap instead of fighting off it, but the vast majority time still it shows its fighting spirit.

Sign up for TV Guide Magazine now!Despite the fact that among its five cohosts oddly did not attend the outlet of ABC's My Children-killing chat 'n chew - Mario Batali briefly made an appearance via satellite from the charitable organisation golf tournament in Jersey City - the table still felt far too overcrowded. Within this culinary fake from the View, More to Wear's Clinton Kelly appeared irritatingly shoehorned in to the Whoopi Goldberg sassy-moderator role. And just in case you skipped the truth that "overall health expert" Daphne Oz is Dr. Oz's daughter the very first ten occasions they pointed out it, the great physician themself turned up for any "surprise" cameo to declare how proud he's of his recently young girl (she lost 25 pounds, and her weight-loss secrets were also packed lower viewers' throats).Meanwhile, Top Chef's Carla Hall and Iron Chef's Michael Symon (each of whom introduced their moms towards the show) attempted to out lower-home one another: Symon cooked cheap-and-easy pork and beans, while Hall introduced the idea of "Gon' Bes": quality recipes gone wrong that, she assured us, are "gon' be OK." At some point maybe we'll have the ability to the same concerning the Chew, whether they can trim the body fat in the cast, reduce the cornball forced merriment and throw a couple of less elements in to the proverbial pot. What's your look at The Chew?Sign up for TV Guide Magazine now!
