Silent Cannes Favorite The Artist Gets Poster: The Golden Age of Black and White

Cannes crowd-pleaser The Artist — a black-and-white, silent (save the musical score) film about Hollywood in the ’20s — isn’t tampering with the poster that ushered in its success: The Weinstein Company is reusing the gorgeous shot that led to the movie’s best actor prize for Jean Dujardin. Michel Hazanavicius’s Gallic flick hits the states on Nov. 23. Can you handle the intense Clark Gable/Claudette Colbert throwback? Ow, ow. It’s been a few years since we’ve had a foreign-language Best Actor win (Roberto Benigni in 1999 was the last, if memory serves, though Marion Cotillard picked up a trophy in 2008 for La Vie en Rose), so I wouldn’t count out Dejardin as a dark horse contender. Of course, the Best Actress race is shaping up to be a grudge match between two very formidable American veterans. [via THR/Risky Business]

'Smurfs' takes top spot overseas

'Cowboys & Aliens' expands to eight more markets next weekend. Call it a little bit of blue magic. In a surprising weekend (Aug. 12-14), Sony's live action-toon hybrid "The Smurfs" collected an outstanding $60.5 million at the overseas box office to unseat reigning champ "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2." In its fifth frame, "Potter" earned $29.3 million for an international cume of $858.2 million. "Smurfs" has cumed $142.8 million overseas. Also outperforming "Potter," 20th Century Fox's holdover "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" posted $40.8 million, thanks to an expansion into territories like France, Germany and the U.K. "Apes" has tallied a total $75.5 million after two weeks in 40 markets. "Smurfs," which is Sony's best summer performer internationally, helped the studio cross the $1 billion mark in overseas grosses. Last year, Sony didn't reach that milestone until Oct. 1. The weekend take for "Smurfs" was boosted by solid 3D perfs in most major markets, including China, France, Germany and Russia. The hybrid pic launched exclusively in 3D in China, taking in $13.4 million, beating fellow 3D pic "Harry Potter," which pulled in $8.1 million in its second semester there. Not surprisingly, "Smurfs" earned 85% of its $4.4 million debut from 3D in Russia -- a boon market for 3D family films. However, the format accounted for 73% of the film's total screen count. Mexico, which only saw $36% from 3D "Smurfs," launched the pic mostly in 2D (70%); the same was true in Spain, though not by nearly as much -- 2D occupied 59% of the pic's total screens in that territory, with 38.5% in 3D. In two weeks, "The Smurf's" top European markets, Germany and France, have contributed cumes of $14.2 million and $12.1 million, respectively. Both territories boast high 3D percentages for "Smurfs": Germany has 77% from 3D, while the format's share in Gaul is at 65.6%. Brazil stands as the best overseas market for "Smurfs," with a local cume of $15.5 million. The film's 3D version hasn't done as well in that market as in other territories, totaling 53.7% from the format, with 2D screens repping 58% of the total there. Meanwhile, Fox's 2D franchise reboot "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" earned top coin in Blighty with almost $10 million, followed by Gaul, which contributed $8.7 million. "Apes" did better than "X-Men: First Class" -- Fox's earlier summer franchise rebirth -- in both territories. "X-Men" opened to just shy of $9 million in the U.K., while French auds shelled out $7.1 million for "First Class." "Apes" debuted to $4.7 million in Germany, is third-best market. Fox plans to expand "Apes" into nine markets the weekend of Aug. 18, including Argentina and South Korea, followed the next weekend by Brazil, then Mexico on Sept. 2 and Japan on Oct. 8. Warner Bros. continues to have success with "Harry Potter" in holdover frames. The film dropped just 36% in Germany, with a weekend take of $2.9 million, and 40% in the U.K., grossing $2.8 million. At $5.2 million, Japanese auds boosted the film 9% over its previous frame. Healthy holds across the board helped "Potter" stay on top internationally for four straight weeks, but an overall 53% overseas weekend drop allowed "Smurfs" and "Apes" to gain ground. "Cowboys & Aliens," which Paramount Intl. is distribbing overseas (Universal has domestic rights), wasn't able to provide much competition in its overseas debut, grossing a so-so $7.1 million from 14 territories, including Russia ($2.8 million) and South Korea ($1.1 million). Pic expands to eight additional markets next weekend. Emilio Mayorga in Barcelona, Ed Meza in Berlin, David Hayhurst in Paris, Nick Vivarelli in Rome and Mark Schilling in Tokyo contributed to this report. Think outside the bucks

HBO's 'Boardwalk Empire,' nominated for a drama series Emmy in its first year, used a bluescreen to help transform its Atlantic City setting from the present......to the past. When "The Good Wife" executive producer Robert King looks over the horizon in the Brooklyn neighborhood where his legal drama's interior sets reside, he can see the bluescreen that HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" uses to add the ocean to its bustling outdoor Atlantic City boardwalk scenes."I just think, 'Wouldn't it be great to have something outside where we could put up a big greenscreen?' " King muses. "But I get it with a period drama. I don't know how they do it on the budget they have."The reported $19 million "Boardwalk" spent on the pilot alone is enough to make any showrunner envious, but it's all a matter of perspective for the six dramas nominated for Emmys this year: "Good Wife," "Dexter," "Friday Night Lights" "Game of Thrones" and "Mad Men.""We're always racing the clock to put out episodes, and you have almost no time to reflect," King continues. "The budgeting concern is about time even more than money."Even for productions with HBO-sized budgets, producers and showrunners always want a little more."The appetite grows. There's never enough money," says "Boardwalk Empire" co-executive producer Gene Kelly. "You're always going to want to be more ambitious than the box that you allow people to play in."The key for any show is choosing the right scene or element on which to splurge."It's all about allocating resources and recognizing our strengths and weaknesses," says "Game of Thrones" executive producer David Benioff. "We'll never be able to match Peter Jackson when it comes to pitting massive armies against one another in a pitched battle. But we can spend a great deal of time with our characters, so that the combat doesn't have to rely on visual effects."Tapping into a production's strengths means going against common TV wisdom for "Friday Night Lights" executive producer Jason Katims. Although building sets and amortizing the expense season to season is the easiest way for a show to ensure cost savings, Katims decided in the show's early days to shoot entirely on location in Austin, Texas, with handheld cameras."We had six-day schedules for the last two seasons of the show, so that was a huge way of controlling costs," Katims says. "We all knew that one of the ways that we were able to stay on the air for as long as we did was to do it for a price."Although Katims was able to save money with simple shoots on location, Benioff says his production's larger budget went to lensing the elaborate fantasy epic in multiple locations."We shot in two countries for the first season," Benioff says. "We'll shoot in three for the second season: in old-growth forests, on rocky beaches, by seaside cliffs, in an ancient walled city, on a glacier just below the Arctic Circle. We inherited a huge world from George Martin, and we never could have done that world justice shooting in Burbank."While King admits his show doesn't have the same breadth as neighboring New York-based "Boardwalk Empire," he says "Good Wife" has hidden benefits for shooting in the Big Apple when it comes to signing guest stars."You suddenly have actors who are held captive to you because they're doing a play in New York, and we work around their play schedule to get them," King says. "So you can get better actors and not bust your budget."Kelly also finds that the faces in the crowd are better in New York."We get so much value out of the costumes and the faces," Kelly says. "That was why 'Boardwalk' could only be shot in New York: the availability of the extras, the various ethnic faces that you get in the population pool here."Whether re-creating a historical time period or giving viewers a sense of realism in the present day, a show has to live within its means creatively and budgetarily."The thing I want more than anything else is to make it to 'The End,' " says "Game of Thrones" executive producer D.B. Weiss. "And for us to make it to 'The End,' the show needs to be sustainable. If the show collapses under its own weight, we won't get there. So it's about finding the right balance -- providing the scale and scope that people come to the show for, and doing it in a way that lets us keep doing it until we get to 'The End.' A Complete Inventory of Clichs From the New Killer Elite Trailer

When the teaser trailer for Killer Elite arrived in June, it presented a wealth of ridiculous awesomeness (Jason Statham jumping out a window while attached to an interrogation chair) and even more ridiculous facial hair (Clive Owen’s villainous moustache; Robert De Niro’s Saddam Hussein beard). Both traits are still present in the new full-length trailer, as well as a host of clichd one-liners that would even make Arnold Schwarzenegger groan with delight. Ahead, Movieline’s complete inventory of the madness. 1. “You ready for this?” 2. “Game’s over.” 3. “We have to do something!” 4. “Close it down.” 5. Text: Based on a true story. 6. “You have no idea who you’re messing with.” 7. “He’s like a father to you, right?” 8. “If you don’t do this, he’s a dead man.” 9. “Danny is gonna come back for me. When he does, you’re out of here.” 10. “He’s your worst nightmare.” 11. “This kind don’t scare easy.” 12. Text: When the hunter, becomes the hunted, may the best man live. 13. “This ends today.” 14. “The war isn’t over until both sides say it is.” 15. “Now the gloves are off.” 16. “It’s over.” 17. “Let’s finish this.” 18a. “This guy’s good.” 18b. (Shot of Statham grabbing co-star Yvonne Strahovski’s butt.) “You have no idea.” 19. “You really are one crazy son of a bitch.” 20. (Looking at cash) “So that’s what this is all about.” 21. Dark Castle Picks Up Thriller 'Non-Stop' for Jeff Wadlow to Direct (Exclusive)

Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty ImagesJeff Wadlow The sky's the limit for Dark Castle, which has picked up Non-Stop, an airplane thriller spec from writers John Richardson and Chris Roach. Jeff Wadlow is set to direct. Joel Silver, Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman are producing. Plot details are being kept under wraps but the project is described by those in the know as a contained, gritty action thriller centering on an air marshall flying on a domestic flight. (We wanted call it a grounded airplane thriller but that wouldn't fly. Thank you, we're here all week.) Wadlow discovered the first-time writers, who are unrepped, and worked with them to develop the script. Dark Castle, which made its early name on supernatural and horror thrillers, is moving to develop more stright thrillers in the realistic action sphere after the success of Unknown, its thriller starring Liam Neeson, which grossed $130 million worldwide on a reported budget of $30 million. The deal puts WME-repped Wadlow, best known for helming Never Back Down, back in business with Silver, this time on a feature level. Silver was a producer on Hail Mary, a CBS pilot Wadlow created and wrote, and the two also worked on the CBS pilot The Odds. Email: Borys.Kit@thr.com Twitter: @Borys_Kit
